The Proposal

The story begins with Colin whisking me away for a romantic getaway.

I didn't know where we were going until the night before, as part of the surprise. When he had first brought the idea of the trip up he told me that he absolute was NOT going to propose on the trip because he wanted to have two separate things to look forward to. I believed him. He also told me about a month before we left that because of the expense of the trip, he probably wouldn't be able to afford a ring for a long time yet. I believed him.

I am a sucker.

On our second day as we were lounging on the beach he asked me how I'd feel about having dinner at the nice restaurant at the hotel that night. I said I liked the idea and he said "good, because we have reservations for 5."

When we went down for dinner, we were asked if the reservation was for outdoors and he said yes. I was confused because I hadn't realized the restaurant had a patio, but didn't say anything. When our table was ready, instead of taking us through the restaurant, they led us away from it. I was trying to figure out where we were going, and then our waitress walked us right down onto the beach where a round table for two was waiting for us. It had a white tablecloth, a candle and a rose on it. It looked so romantic, like something out of a movie.

That was when it first occurred to me that he might propose, but I didn't want to get ahead of myself and end up disappointed, so I tried not to think about that.

So we sat down at our table and looked over the menu while people continued sunbathing and throwing around footballs in the background. A lot of people stared at us. One guy walking by with his family shouted "Did he propose yet?" It could have made things awkward, except that I laughed and joked that I should have said "But this is only our first date!" And then Colin joked "I'm just trying to get her into bed!" and it just seemed normal again.

We ordered a bottle of red wine and steaks for dinner. Then I noticed Colin fidgeting under the table and I looked under trying to figure out what was going on and I saw his ipod dock tucked away under. This was especially funny because just earlier that day I'd been lamenting the fact that I hadn't thought to remind him to bring it and he was just like "yeah, wish I'd remembered." This didn't make me more suspicious though, since I figured it was just part of the surprise romantic evening he'd planned. Yes, I'm a very trusting individual.

We ordered our dinner and it arrived and we ate it watching the sun set and talking together. It was one of the best meals I'd ever had in my life. As the sun was making gorgeous pink and orange streaks across the sky, he asked me if I wanted to dance. The beach wasn't nearly as crowded anymore and the wine had gone to my head, so I agreed. We danced for a bit and I told him that this was the most perfect night ever and he smiled at me. It was so perfect that I started to worry that if he didn't propose tonight that when he did it would actually be a let down!!

Then our song came on. He started telling me how much he loved me and what I meant to him and why he wanted to be with me forever. And I, starting to get really nervous, kept cracking jokes throughout because I am just that sort of classy lady.

And then he said "I have just one more surprise for you," and he got down on one knee and asked "Will you marry me?" And I said "Of course I will!" and pulled him to his feet and kissed him and he slid the ring on my finger and it fit perfectly and everything was just perfect.

Best night of my life. :)
